Boost Endurance With Chia

The Tarahumara runners of Mexico's Copper Canyon region have used chia Iskiate (a drink made from chia seeds, water, lemon juice and honey to sweeten) to fuel their 100+ mile runs. Chia is famous for its endurance and strength-promoting qualities. But is the superfoods reputation warranted or merely evolved from folklaw passed on by countless generations from ancient times?

To test this superfood, a few friends drank down iskiate before runs of up to three hours, and were impressed with the results. We felt strong running at a high aerobic pace (a tick under 80-percent max heart rate), even in 90-degree heat. After about an hour, I noticed a mental and physical kick. Near the run's end, we felt we could happily continue. I can concur with this as I run several times a week not for three hours mind, but over an hour at a time and when I am finished I feel I could easily run it all again, its a weird feeling but your legs and brain are telling you its OK to do it again. Strange..

Professor Wayne Coates of the University of Arizona, an expert on chia and co-author of" Chia: Rediscovering a Forgotten Crop of the Aztecs" and an ultra endurance runner with several 100-milers under his belt, suspects chia's ability to boost endurance is due partly to it's inflammation-reducing omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and antioxidants. "It's similar to taking ibuprofen," says Pro. Coates.

While chia isn't a replacement for your usual fuels, it contains very little carbohydrate. The seeds are packed with fiber and an excellent source of calcium, boron (boron is used by the body to transfer calcium into the bones for healthy strong bones) phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc and copper. Chia seeds also offer protein in its fullest form, offering a complete essential amino-acid package, making it an ideal post-workout recovery food. As well as a drink to be taken before any long distance feats of endurance in any sport. Chia can be used by most athletes in any sport from running to soccer, badminton to tennis chia has the energy boost and endurance needed to see you through even the toughest games.

Make your own Iskiate by mixing 1 level tablespoon of chia seeds in 1 cup of water with a squeeze of lime and 1 tablespoon of organic rice syrup to sweeten. Drink it 1 to3 hours before a long run or tough workout, since the seeds take up to four hours to digest. I have mine in the morning for breakfast with orange juice that I make the night before and put in the refrigerator to cool overnight. This chia gel keeps me going till right into the afternoon even if I have done a training session.
